What in the name of zarking fardwarks has Dirk 'Turlingdrome' Maggs
done to the plot of Mostly Harmless?

OK, I can see why they wanted to reintroduce Zaphod (cos MWD wanted to
be in it, so hey...), but they didn't need to make Zarniwhoop = Van
Haarl and they really didn't need to make Van Haarl a Vogon in
disguise.

Look on the bright side. At least they *didn't* bring Humma Kavula
into it!

Personally, I think it's great that the show's following the old DNA
tradition of re-inventing, re-interpreting and re-writing itself.
(Actually, that's something that the other sort of DNA does too. He
was aptly named!)

Now, if this froup had been around 25 years ago, you'd probably have
been complaining that the books had changed the plot by moving
Milliways from Magrathea to the Frogstar, etc. etc. Some people are
never happy unless everything's always exactly the way it's always
been.

OTOH I love all the changes, and I want to see where the story will go
with this new set-up. Just relax and enjoy the ride.

That's because it *is* great to "reinvent" like this - like DNA himself
would surely have done. DNA 'fanboys' just don't seem to get this - for some
odd reason, they want a literal interpretation of the book. Artistic license
is seemingly beyond them.

That is not entirely true. Many froupies actually value the diversity
between the different versions of the stories.

Anyway I like it a lot. I almost can't wait till (!) next week.

(who thinks it would be nice if Gusty showed up; at last I got the

Just flicked through my copy of MH (its been a few years since I read
it last) and couldn't find any reference to Vann Harl actually being a
vogon. But I may have missed it.

Certainly, he is in league with them and InfiniDim employs a lot of
vogons, but that doesn't necessarily make him a vogon...

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the Secondary Phase
didn't really fit anywhere in the storyline and was bypassed leaving
Zaphods adventures in it unexplained further on...bringing him into
this explains the discrepancies more, don't u think?

It is another attempt to try and make sense of the radio show storyline not
following where it was going before. They tried to explain it previously
which I think was enough. They're maybe overdoing the explanations thing a
bit now.

I actually quite like the latest series. It isn't deviation that is objected
to. In previous incarnations the storyline is mucked about with. You can
divide HHGG into little scenes, guide entries,
bits-that-are-there-for-the-purpose-of-being-able-to-do-a-ch eap-gag and so
on. Take all these bits and jumble them up and it wouldn't matter too much.
As it is Arthur and the guys are flitting back and forth through time space
and the improbable.

To me it isn't 'the story' that is important - it's all the clever and
funny stuff. The new series is good because it is adding funny stuff. The
film and the last series took funny and clever stuff away.

Which is what they got with the Tertiary Phase - and it didn't quite come
off, did it?

4th series was a return to form and I'm excited about the 5th!

Well, opinions vary as to the relative merits of the books, but I think
the Tertiary Phase came off okay as an adaptation of LTUAE. It's just that
LTUAE has a different feel, being largely a Dr Who story with Hitchhiker's
characters shoe-horned into it (with varying degrees of success).

Yes, the Quintessential Phase has been great so far. Roll on Tuesday!

I've been very satisfied with the 3rd radio series, and most of the
fourth, although I prefer Tertieary phase over Quandary. So far I really
like the Quintessential - somehow it's just a refreshing replay in the
same jokes for different reasons and in different order - really
Hitchhiker'ish.

I didn't like Colin's voice, though, but I'm probably hard to please,
since I like Colin so much :-)

One thing, though: They're cutting it close to get a proper handling of
Random, the Perfectly Normal Beasts, the King's Domain, all of which I'm
really looking forward to. However, I'm not too worried, since I'm
certain that even if it get's a bit rushed it will be just perfect when
I buy it from the BBC, just as all the bits I missed from the Tertiary
Phase were there. (I haven't bought Quandary yet, but with the quality
material we've been served so far, I'm sure I will be more than satisfied).

And yet some can't understand and accuse 'DNA fanboys' of not accepting plot
changes.

Why do some people like making derogatory comments to others they disagree
with ? Or maybe we should call each other DNA fanboys all the time ?

Me too. He doesn't sound too overjoyed. I've still enjoyed the scenes with
him and Ford. Some of the best bits maybe.

I wish they'd gone for 6 programs per book. I'm sure they could have filled
the time nicely.

How odd. I always thought the original prototype version of LtU&E was
rejected by the Doctor Who people because it *didn't* feel like a
Doctor Who script.

Indeed, even the Doctor's new series with its increased budget probably
wouldn't attempt location filming at Lords' Cricket Ground of an alien
invasion destroying the place, with dead and wounded crickets and
spectators lying in the ruins.

The huge, epic scale of that battle alone should be enough to convince
*anyone* that this doesn't feel like Doctor Who!

Who could possibly not like Colin much? Somehow I also think it could
be better though I do not really know how.

Yeah, I wish that too. Four fits per phase just seems too short - the
story seems to be rushed. But of course that may just be me.

I got my tertiary cd's last week and haven't had time to listen to
them yet (I got primary-quandary at the same time and have been knid
of busy) - so I do not know though on the cover it says "Episodes
specially extended for CD!".

I really think so. Practically all the places I found the radio version
story hard to follow or missed some joke it was on the CDs. It's only a
few minutes extra, but they make all the difference for the coherence
and timing of jokes.

So even though I really liked the radio version, I was really overjoyed
with the CD version. I recommend it warmly.

As I said, this is only for the tertiary version, since I haven't bough
the Quandary (or, of course, the Quintessential) yet, so there I cannot
no, except I think Gusty recommended Quandary a while back.
